Spring vForum Online: Now More Than Ever


Online events are big and recently gaining more attention. As the global community learns to combat COVID-19, we are also learning how to better use technology for good, a mantra Pat Gelsinger and VMware speak about often.  
But what can we do as vAdmins to be part of the “tech for good” initiative? Amid the COVID response, many VMUG members work on the front lines in industries such as healthcare, medical research, manufacturing, and law enforcement. Others have deployed VDI systems, scrambled to help office workers prepare for a lengthy work–from–home stay, or implemented new technology to keep a connected office. All of these are ways tech is being used for the good of the global community working to keep economies going and paychecks going to a workforce that needs it.   
This new work environment requires everyone to stay current and connected. You can do both during vForum Online on May 13th. Key topics are empowering the digital workspace (something everyone is thinking about), keeping remote workers secure AND productive, and modernizing applications with VMware Tanzu. As business requirements persist, modern applications will play a big part for many companies.  
Pat Gelsinger is keynoting and joining him will be Muneyb Minhazuddin, the VP of Cloud, Security, and Workspace Solutions. After the keynote, attendees can choose from 38 technical breakouts. I’ll be introducing three sessions this year: 
  • Maximizing the Benefits of vSphere 7  
  • Acceleration Strategies for Orchestration, Extensibility, and Automation 
  • Maximizing NSX-T Benefits 
I chose these sessions because our members know vSphere. It’s what we built a career on and it’s what will take our career to the next level. Building off vSphere is automation skills. We are asked to do more with less and adopt a DevOps or cloud operating model. Finally, NSX-T allows you to have a seamless network across compute platforms. I’ll also be providing a special discount code for VMUG Advantage, VMUG’s subscription-based offering.

MEMBER HCI INSIGHTS – THREE-YEAR TRENDS

The Dell SDS (Software-Defined Storage)/HCI (Hyperconverged Infrastructure) Survey Installment #3 The third installment of the HCI Member Survey has concluded and there are some obvious results as well as some surprises as the IT landscape continues to shift. With IT being asked to deal with the long tail of a pandemic, global turmoil, supply shortages, and a talent gap, making our systems run efficiently is key. Also important is focusing on your core business, not the minutiae of maintaining servers, VMs, and appliances. Trends The majority, 87%, of respondents are using vSphere. This continues to be the de facto standard hypervisor for on-premises and has been for the past 3 years. However, recently, there has been significant growth in KVM, increasing 9% (from 10% in 2021 to 19% in 2022), and AHV, increasing 6% (from a 6% to 12% increase).
